In the recent past, the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue honoring India’s first deputy prime minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, witnessed a remarkable surge in daily tourist visits, surpassing the pre-pandemic statistics and emerging as one of the most frequented non-religious destinations in the country.

(A.1) Massive increase in Footfall and setting Records

The average daily tourist footfall in the post-covid era was 12,369. It is a substantial rise from the pre-Covid period when it stood at 10,194, marking an impressive jump of 21%. On weekends, the increase was even more noticeable, with a daily footfall of 18,187 compared to the pre-Covid figure of 13,937, signifying a 30.5% surge.

Notably, the highest one-day footfall at the towering 182-meter statue also saw a sharp increase. Back in August to December 2019, the maximum number of footfalls was around 34,136, to 34,674 respectively. But two years later on November 6, 2021, the maximum footfalls surged to 50,108 and spiked to 51,871 the following day.

Since its inauguration, a total of 7.94 million people have visited the Statue of Unity. It was confirmed by one of the officials of the tourist site. “Before the onslaught of COVID-19, 4.42 million people had graced its presence in less than 15 months. However, the tourist footfall was hampered due to two lockdowns and two periods of restricted entry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkably, since June 8, 2021, the tourist footfall has exceeded the pre-Covid daily averages,” the official added.

In 2022, more than 4.6 million visitors flocked to the Statue of Unity, exploring various attractions within its premises. However, it was in 2023, after its inauguration in 2018, that the Statue of Unity experienced its busiest year yet. A staggering 5 million people visited the towering statue in Ektanagar, marking the highest annual footfall the tourist site has ever recorded!

Former Union Minister of State for Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel, had informed parliament that from November 2018 to February 2020, just before the first lockdown, 4,258,060 tourists visited the Statue of Unity, with a monthly average of 266,129. “According to information received from the Gujarat government, the total income generated from selling tickets, including parking fees, from November 2018 to February 2020, amounted to ₹116.31 crore,” Patel revealed.
